Dossier 10 of 10Escalating

The Space Race.

Two superpowers. One Moon. The last time this happened, humanity made its greatest leap. This time there's more at stake and significantly more paperwork.

The Last Moon Race Ended With Humans Walking on Another World. Here We Go Again.

The United States landed on the Moon for the last time on December 14, 1972. It has been 54 years. China became the first to return a soil sample from the far side of the Moon in 2024.

China's lunar program targets a crewed Moon landing before 2030. NASA Administrator Isaacman acknowledged: "They might be early, and recent history says we might be late."

NASA's current target for the first crewed landing since 1972 is 2028. The first nation to return astronauts to the Moon will establish the framework for international lunar operations, resource claims, and scientific precedent for decades.

The United States has responded with the Artemis Accords — signed by 26 countries. China and Russia have their own framework. The Moon is about to have two competing governance frameworks and no functioning municipal government.
