Six Years to Jupiter. Possible Ocean. Two Million Names Aboard.
Europa Clipper launched on October 14, 2024 and will not arrive at Jupiter until April 2030. That is a six-year journey traveling at roughly 108,000 km/h.
Europa is covered by a thick shell of ice, beneath which lies a liquid ocean — possibly containing more water than all of Earth's oceans combined. This ocean may have existed for billions of years. It's 484 million miles away.
On December 3, 2026, Europa Clipper will swing past Earth at approximately 2,000 miles distance for a gravity assist. It is coming home for the holidays. Briefly. Without stopping.
The spacecraft carries a microchip with 2.6 million names and a poem by US Poet Laureate Ada Limón. It is a science mission that also carries art and names. This is one of the nicer things humans have done.
